How does Pilates benefit your mental health?
1- Improves your self-esteem
Many people choose to practise Pilates to escape a sedentary lifestyle, feel stronger or look better physically.
Starting to move and work on our fitness is a way to start changing the beliefs we have about ourselves, such as "I can't", "that's not for me", "I'm giving up", "I don't like my body", etc.
2- Improves your sleep quality
Through the practice of conscious breathing, we enter a calm and relaxed state, favouring a better quality of rest.
We get rid of toxins through exhalation and oxygenate the skin, muscles and organs during inhalation.
3- Helps manage stress and anxiety
In response to conscious breathing and an awareness of movement, the nervous system reacts by maintaining a sense of calm and deep wellbeing.
This response allows us to cope with everyday stress and anxiety and manage them without feeling overwhelmed.
4- Helps improve your mood
When we exercise, we secrete a hormone called serotonin, popularly known as the happy hormone.
This neurotransmitter is involved in numerous physical and psychological functions, such as mood, sleep, appetite, sex drive, etc. When its levels increase in neuronal circuits, it generates feelings of wellbeing, relaxation, satisfaction and increases concentration and self-esteem.
For example, there are people who come to classes wanting to practise the Pilates method to reduce anxiety or stress, and after a few weeks they notice how much better and more liberated they feel.
